Little North Attleboro League Youth Baseball

8 yr-old Field Day — June 4, 2005

Wrapup

‘‘Awesome’’

‘‘Cool’’

‘‘Wicked fun.’’

That’s how young ballplayers in the Little North Attleboro League baseball program described the second-annual Field Day for the eight-year-old division, which was held this past Saturday at the Ruth Rhind field.

‘‘It’s getting bigger and better each year,’’ said Eric Gimler, director of the 8-year-old division, who organized the day’s events. ‘‘The word is out — it’s fun for all.’’

More than 80 young baseball players — and dozens more parents, siblings and friends — converged on the baseball and playground complex from 3 to 6 p.m. for a sweaty afternoon of baseball, a barbecue and a raffle with more than 30 prizes donated from area companies.

Cameron Glennon of the Athletics took the grand prize: Two tickets to prime seats behind the third-base dugout at the June 5 Red Sox-Angels game at Fenway Park.

The day kicked off with the ballplayers divided into groups to participate in various skill stations around the park, including one led by Randy Beals, owner of Planet Baseball in Attleboro, who volunteered his time to teach proper pitching form.

Managers and coaches from several teams headed up the other skill stations, including throwing and catching; positioning for pop flies; base running and scrimmaging.

The youngsters then gathered for the free raffle, where prizes included the Sox tickets, donated by New England Development, as well as toys donated by Hasbro toy company; baseballs, batting gloves and other related materials donated by Planet Baseball and Wal-Mart; tickets to the Brockton Rox baseball team, featuring former Red Sox pitcher Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd, donated by Campanelli Corp.; and cinema tickets donated by National Amusements.

The boys and girls then swapped their baseball gloves for Super Soakers to help stave off the 90-degree temperatures, while parent volunteers cooked up hundreds of burgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks that were generously donated by Sysco Foods, Cumberland Farms, Stop & Shop and Wal-Mart.

The eight-year-old division is one of only two divisions in the LNAL program to sponsor a division-wide field day event like this, and it’s already become one of the most anticipated events of the season. All in all, Gimler said, ‘‘The kids had lots of fun.’’
